Interesting Article on Vegas Cabs

I thought this was an interesting article, since taxis seem to be a hot topic on many of the Vegas forums.  You can find the link here:

My New Review Pages

I am starting a new section on my blog.  I want to start pages for my reviews of hotels, restaurants and nightlife.  I want to share my experiences, both good and bad, with everyone.  I have been to many, many Vegas establishments over the years but I will only post reviews of places I've been within the past 12 months.  Once 12 months pass, the reveiw will be deleted.  I want to make sure that everyone has current information.  I will include as many pictures as possible.  I hope you all enjoy my reviews!

You can find the Reviews section in the right column under my bio.

Thanks for reading my blog!

My 5 Favorite Paid Attractions on the Strip – in no particular order

These are 5 Attractions on the Strip that I think are worth paying for.

What a peaceful place to visit!  Each animal is more gorgeous than the next.  The dolphins are so smart and beautiful.  It’s easy to watch them for hours.  You can even sign up to be a trainer for a day here.  There are so many beautiful wild animals.  You will see everything from alpacas to lions.  The Secret Garden is tucked away behind the pool area of the Mirage and you will truly escape from the hustle and bustle of the Strip while you are here. Click here for info on the VIP tour.

2. The Stratosphere Tower and Rides
Ok, even if you don’t go on the rides, you have to at least go all the way up the Stratosphere tower.  The view is fantastic.  The whole Strip is right in front of you.  I have to be honest and tell you that I’ve only seen the view during the day.  I will eventually go back at night but the daytime view is pretty great.  The only ride I’ve been on is the X-Scream and I loved it!  Let me give you a little back story.  I DO NOT GO ON RIDES.  I have never been on a rollercoaster, nor do I plan to ever go on one, but for some reason I decided I had to go on a ride on top of the Stratosphere.  I have no regrets.  I’m very glad I did it.  It was such an adrenaline rush!  The added bonus was that I was the ONLY person on the ride!  It really is a priceless picture.  Even if you’re not an adrenaline junkie, I would suggest trying one of the rides.  Just bear in mind that you do have to go through security and metal detectors to go to the top of the tower.

The Eiffel Tower boasts a spectacular view from and interesting perspective.  Rather than looking down and the Strip and seeing it all in front of you, it’s all around you.  The line can be very long depending on the time of the day, but there is a sign that lets you know how long the wait is before you buy the tickets.  I’ve only seen the view at night and it literally took my breath away.  Also, there are usually coupons in the coupon books that you can find in the cabs, so you don’t have to pay full price.

4. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum at the Venetian
The wax museum is such a fun place to visit.  Although I had been to the museum in NYC several times, there are different figures in the Vegas location.  There is also a haunted house tucked inside.  WARNING: The haunted house is not for the faint of heart!  It’s so much fun to pose with your favorite “celebrities”.  It’s also a lot of fun to see how big or small your favorite stars are because the wax figures are exact replicas.  There are usually coupons for Madame Tussauds in the coupon books also.

Although I haven’t been here in 13 years, I truly remember it vividly.  My father and I have fond memories of the classic cars.  We both have a passion for classic cars and this exhibit was like a dream come true.  We even saw one of Liberace’s cars…it had candelabras on it!  I am planning to return soon to take a fresh look at the cars but I would highly recommend seeing this attraction, even if you’re only slightly interested in cars.

My Favorite Las Vegas Discount Site

My favorite website for Vegas promo codes is SmarterVegas.com. Click here for the direct link.  I highly recommend you sign up for their emails.  They send emails with updated promo codes every 1-3 weeks.  They have promo codes listed on the website without signing up, but you get ones through your email that aren't listed to the public on the site.  SmarterVegas.com is a great resource when booking your Vegas hotel.  I know I hate to pay full price on a hotel room in Vegas and you should too.

If you have a players club card at various hotels, you will probably get offers in your email and in your players club accounts, but SmarterVegas.com often has promo codes that I don't get in my offers.

They also have show discounts.  They don't have codes to ALL Vegas shows, but there are usually quite a few listed.

Click here for Cirque du Soleil discounts via their own website.

Las Vegas Taxi Cab Directory

I want to provide my readers with some taxi information.  Of course, it's easy to grab a cab at a hotel, but what do you do when you want to go off the Strip?  You need to have a phone number of a cab company so you can return to your hotel.  Also, I want to provide some of the fare information.

The base fare is $3.30, which means as soon as you open the door to the taxi, the meter will read $3.30
Each additional 1/13 mile is $.20, which means it is $2.60 per mile
There is an airport pick up fee which is $1.80
There is a waiting time fee which is $30/hour if you need a cab to wait for you somewhere (maybe while you take a picture in front of the Welcome To Las Vegas sign, for instance)

A lot of the cabs accept credit cards now, but keep in mind that a lot of them still DO NOT accept credit cards.  Always have enough cash on you just in case you end up in a cab that does not accept cards.

Always remember that it is against the law to hail a cab on the Strip.  When you need a cab, you must go to a hotel valet.  There is always a designated area for cab drop offs and pick ups at the hotel valets.  If a valet puts you in a cab, make sure to tip him a few dollars.  Not all hotels have someone putting you in a cab, though.  For example, I was at Hooters a couple of years back and there was no one at their entrance to get me a cab.

Here's a few phone numbers:

Ace Cab Company

Criss Angel

I'm not ashamed to say that I've been a fan of Criss Angel's for years now.  Although I still haven't read a good review of his Cirque show, Believe, I am still a fan.  But now, I like Criss Angel even more.  Through Make A Wish, he granted a wish for two terminally ill teens.  I know the story is a few days old now but I really think everyone should read about this kind act.  The link is below.

Fantastic Map

I found a fantastic map that outlines the history of Las Vegas. It is definitely worth taking a look at. It's organized through a great timeline. I was able to see what hotels were on the strip during my parents' first trip in the 70's and what hotels were on the strip during my first trip in the 90's. The map starts at 1930 and finishes with 2007. Be sure to click on the hotels for more information and pictures. I HIGHY recommend checkout out the link below.

My Vegas Playlist

I have a playlist on my iphone filled with only Vegas songs. I usually listen to them on the plane going to Vegas but I also listen to them randomly while I'm working out or just laying in bed. Here's my list:

Viva Las Vegas by Elvis - a Vegas classic! This song just screams VEGAS!

Waking Up in Vegas by Katy Perry - just a happy song that puts me in the Vegas mood!

A Good Run of Bad Luck by Clint Black - a little bit more mellow but still a great Vegas song.

Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis - this is a personal favorite because I still remember sitting on the bed of the Flamingo (when it was still called the Flamingo Hilton) and watching the movie Fools Rush In. This song was in the movie and even though it was 13 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. This song is extremely sentimental to me.

Luck Be a Lady by Frank Sinatra - this song just has to put you in the Vegas mood! I always picture the Rat Pack when I hear it. Ahhhh Old Vegas!

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas by Brandon Flowers - this is not necessarily a popular song but it is a great one. It feels like a love song to Las Vegas. It doesn't just talk about the glorious side of Vegas, it talks about the dark side but it is a spectacular song. The writer/singer is from Las Vegas and you can tell how much he loves his city. He is the lead singer of the band, The Killers.

Animal by Neon Trees - I just relive the Camp Vegas commercials every time I hear this song!

Does anyone else have any other favorite Vegas songs?

Wow! It's been 2 years since the great Danny Gans has passed away. He was a very big part of Las Vegas Entertainment and will live on in our hearts forever. RIP Danny. xoxo
